1.Introduction

INWES has been actively participating in the United Nations Climate Change (or COP) events for many years : In the Paris COP21 in 2015, then INWES participated to COP26 in Glasgow. In November 2022, INWES attended  the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) hosted by Egypt in Sharm El-Sheikh.

2.Participation of INWES to COP27

In collaboration wth Architecture 2030 and ASHRAE, INWES held a session in COP27 Side Event on November 16th : COP27 Side Event : Planning, Design and Development in the Global South : The “How To” for People + Planet.

INWES was represented by Ms Imen Makhlouf , from Tunisia, senior civil Engineer, Transport and Energy infrastrcuture Expert. INWES individual member

2.1 Presenters

Speakers included a diverse, multidisciplinary group of leading practitioners in planning, design and construction of buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure, with emphasis on practitioners planning and designing in Africa and the Global South.

2.2 Partners

Architecture 2030’s mission is to rapidly transform the built world from the major emitter of greenhouse gasses to a central solution to the climate emergency. 3. Participation of INWES to Thailand pavillon panel :

An interactive panel was held in Thailand pavillon on Thursday November 17Th in collaboration with Architecture 2030 and ASHRAE.

At COP27, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a suite of programs to advance gender-responsive climate action.
New announcements include:

  • Advancing Gender-Responsive Climate Action
  • USAID announced $21.8 million dedicated to gender-responsive climate action from the Gender Equity and Equality Action (GEEA) Fund, surpassing its $14 million COP26 commitment. This includes funding for organizations working in over 37 countries to address gender-based violence connected to climate, support to national governments to increase gender equality in their national climate commitments, and programs that advance green jobs for women and gender-smart climate information services.

Egypt launched the African Women’s Climate Adaptive Priorities (AWCAP) initiative, with the goal of promoting a gender-sensitive approach to adaptation, just transition and climate responses. The initiative aims to ensure that African women benefit from the $500 billion that are to be spent in the next 10 years to qualify employees for the green transition and that African women in science, as well as African women leading green start-ups, receive the necessary support and funds.

6. Some Proposal for actions after COP27 and before COP28 :

  • Developing multi-stakeholder partnership opportunities
  • Better promotion of INWES in Africa , launch of initiatives, actions, …
  • Propose Projects/Initiative in relation with climate solution for women/Girls in African countries
  • Building capacity and training for INWES members in area of climat change for a better understanding of environmental and climate change issues
