Volunteering with INWES

INWES is an organisation that relies on the inspiration and teamplay of its active members. Our Board of Directors is composed of senior activists, but we need more volunteers to work on several different levels. We are seeking people to join our committees to work with our communications, programs, fund development and our IT systems. This volunteer work will help us expand our actions, grow our Regional Networks, and support other women in STEM groups and NGOs to be part of this global network.

“Working with my international colleagues has been very interesting and has given me lots of chances to learn lots of new skills.” Aguri Nakano, JNWES, Japan, Board Director 2017-2023.

If you would like to contribute to make the world more inclusive, and join our worldwide team of active women in engineering and science, please complete the INWES Volunteer Form! This form allows you to explain what you would like to contribute to, and provides us with information to connect you to committees and activities at INWES.

This is a call for INWES members:

  • Who would like to develop new skills,
  • Are experts and experienced in the skills we need to be even better at being INWES,
  • Who would like to work with international colleagues and have ideas and energy to see those ideas through,
  • With little or lots of volunteering, business and international experience.

“Learning about how a global organisation works has been very valuable to me, and my volunteer work has let me apply my business skills in a new context. It has also been inspiring!” Sylvia Kegel, Board Director, 2017-23.

We are not always looking for experience, but we value teamwork and collaboration. The skills and experience you gain from taking an active part in INWES can be hugely valuable – as a volunteer, you can explore roles and possibilities in the work towards a common goal: the INWES mission to build a better future worldwide through the full and effective participation of women and girls at all levels of STEM. The opportunities for networking can also be hugely valuable to those of you looking to strengthen your international links.

“The networking has been a very good thing, and meeting people from all over the world has been very nice. Sharing experiences with women from Africa, Europe, the Americas and from all over Asia has been enriching.” Battsengel Baatar, WSTEM, Mongolia, Board Director 2021-26.

Examples of tasks requiring volunteers for INWES:

  • In communications, you could help drive content in social media, write press releases, support the INWES Newsletter editor, manage our images, work on our website, etc.
  • For our education and research activities, you could gather and communicate on international and regional conferences focussed on areas of interest to INWES, for example: STEM education; gender equity in industry; gender mainstreaming in climate change and sustainable development; etc.
  • We also need  IT and tool support: experience of Google Suite, Zoom management, and Oracle Netsuite, and expertise in website and social media channels development, Customer Relationship Management and Enterprise Resource Planning would be valuable, but so is the willingness to learn how to use the IT systems at INWES.
  • For projects and programs: you could be helping to organize webinars and online gatherings for example for youth empowerment and linking our student groups across the world; or working with our collaboration partners to increase the reach of the projects currently in place: these include our oral histories work and our archives of the INWES story.
  • For our regional networks, we always need to find active people to organise and manage regional conferences and meetings.
  • In governance, we are always on the lookout for people who are interested in managing an NGO and able to work at the detail of finance, legal and regulatory aspects.

We will use the information you give us to contact you and invite you for a first meeting with some of our Directors and other active volunteers.

Looking forward to working with you!

“I got involved in INWES in 2016, and I found that learning about the global and international issues gave me a much better set of tools to understand how to start solving the national gender inequities in STEM.” Sarah Peers, NMITE, United Kingdom, Board Director 2017-2020, 2024-26.
