With Warmth and Technology: HERStory Comes to Life as an Interactive Storybook

[Taipei, October 30, 2024] In a pioneering step to promote gender equality and science education, the Society of Taiwan Women in Science and Technology (TWiST), under the guidance of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), R.O.C., creates a unique digital interactive storybook titled Intertwining Space: A Trailblazing Woman Scientist’s Journey Through Science and Soul – Wu Chia-Li (吳嘉麗), as part of the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES) “HERStory” initiative. This AI-driven interactive storybook combines cutting-edge multimedia technology to share the inspiring story of Professor Wu Chia-Li, highlighting her contributions to gender equality and science education and sparking interest among younger generations to explore science and STEM fields.

Inspiring Through Story: A Legacy of Science and Dreams

This digital interactive storybook offers an enriching and immersive experience, vividly recreating Professor Wu’s journey in founding the Society of Taiwan Women in Science and Technology (TWiST). Readers can follow her through time and space, gaining insights into Taiwan’s natural sciences and ecosystems and witnessing her inspiring teaching methods, which ignited a passion for science in countless young women. Using time-sequence and location-based interactive triggers, the oral histories of women scientists transform into lifelike chapters that allow readers to feel these scientists’ personal and professional journeys as they overcame historical challenges and achieved extraordinary success.

Innovative Interactive Technology for a New Reading Experience

Created by Assistant Professor Hsiao-Mei Lin (Lydia) and her students Xin Tseng(Sharon), Kean-Kit Wong, and Chian-Yu Tsai (Carly) from Taipei Tech’s Interactive Design Department, the storybook is hosted on the OiO digital platform. With advanced A.I. integration, OiO seamlessly combines text, imagery, videos, and GPS-enabled location services, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the lives of women scientists. Readers can walk the same streets, pause at inspiring sites, and engage in real-world locations for a deeply interactive educational experience.

The platform also includes STEM mini-games related to the fields of these pioneering scientists, allowing readers to learn STEM knowledge through play. This storybook offers a rich, immersive reading journey by integrating animations, games, and multimedia. Intertwining Space, Professor Wu Chia-Li’s interactive storybook, will be available on the OiO platform, with plans for extensive promotion to encourage more readers to discover the stories of STEM and trailblazing women in science.
