Year 2022 was a fantastic year for Penang Branch Women Engineers (WE) leading by Ir. Catherine Sim, who put in a lot of effort to organize events to benefit the members of IEM. In September, WE has successfully organized the Geotechnical Engineering Seminar joint effort together with EM Penang Branch Geotechnical sub-group and local municipal councils. Another milestone that marked the end of journey 2022. Much appreciation goes to the sponsors, who are also exhibitors who have helped to grace the seminar.
On 1st September, a full-day Geotechnical Engineering Seminar 2022 was held at g-Hotel Gurney, Penang, led by Immediate Past Chairman Ir. Yau Ann Nian, supported by Women Engineers, Young Engineers and organizing committees of IEM Penang Branch. The seminar served as a collaboration platform for municipal councils and IEM Penang Branch members to understand the authority submission requirements from Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP) and Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai (MBSP). There are prominent speakers invited from Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to share the Professional Practitioner Engineers’ knowledge as well as challenges.
The seminar highlighted various geotechnical engineering challenges that professionals and municipal councils face. It also aimed to enhance the technical know-how of Geotechnical Engineering among professionals. At the same time, it provided a networking platform for the members to build connections amongst engineers who were passionate about continuing professional development. This seminar also served as the platform to better understand Geotechnical Engineering from the design and construction industry and the statutory aspect.
Ir. Heng was glad to be selected as the Emcee to host the event. During the opening session, Penang State Executive Councillor of Infrastructure & Transport, Yang Berhormat YB. Zairil Khir Johari successfully officiated the event. This event has gathered many eminent speakers locally and regionally with diverse areas of knowledge and expertise related to the topic. There are 7 speakers from the industry. 2 invited speakers from Penang municipal are the current acting director for Engineering Department, Ir. Cheah Chin Kooi and En. Mohd Syukri, sharing the MBPP and MBSP highlights on engineering plans submission. The rest of the 5 are from various states in Malaysia, and one is from Singapore.
The sharing from the first speaker is Ir. Yau Ann Nian, a Fellow member of IEM, has 40 years of civil engineering experience in the construction industry. He is the Director of WEA Engineers & Associates from Penang and shared the first exciting topic on the Penang Hill-site Development and Agricultural Land, Planning, Design, Stabilisation and Maintenance. Follow by Ir. Dr. Lee Sieng Kai, the managing director of Glostrext Group of Companies from Kuala Lumpur has shared the topic of Wireless Network Automation (WiNA) System, Data Management & Visualisation Platform for Geotechnical & Structural Health Monitoring which has given eye-opening to the audiences on the technology advancement in the industry.
Dr. Leong Kam Weng, the Director of Keller Foundations (S.E. Asia) Pte Ltd from Singapore, gave a wonderful sharing on Ground Improvement for Reclamation & Developments on Reclaimed Land, which benefits the engineers working in the construction industry. Ir. Dr. Goh Teik Lim, the founder of ATSUNEW GIKEN has given an awe-inspiring presentation on Earth Retaining or Stabilising Structures (ERSS) Works by Silent Piling Method using Advanced Steel Sheet Pile Materials. Lastly, the event ended with the presentation sharing from Ir. Dr. Wong Fook Keong, who is the Managing Director of WEA Engineers & Associates from Selangor and shared a Case Study of Negative Skin Friction on piles in a Project and Evaluation of Pile Acceptance based on MLT Results.
It was a very fruitful and exciting event about the experiences and valuable materials sharing we couldn’t have gained in any other way. We received excellent feedbacks and supports from the attendees and the organizing committee, which made this event meaningful.
