The UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences aims to promote and honour excellence in the basic sciences, defined to include the disciplines of chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology, the foundation on which scientific knowledge can be propagated and which are fundamental to the advancement of innovation and sustainable development.
UNESCO invites the governments of Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions, the non-governmental organizations maintaining official partnerships with UNESCO and active in relevant fields covered by the Prize, the UNESCO Chairs, the Category 2 Centres, the international scientific unions and universities to propose individual candidates for the 2021 edition of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences.
Awarded every year to two prize-winners, its purpose is to reward individuals for their major achievements in terms of development, diffusion, and international cooperation in the basic sciences, which had a significant transformational impact on a regional or global scale. Each of the two individual prize-winners will receive a financial award of USD 250,000 as well as a gold medal and a diploma.
No self-nomination shall be considered.
All applications must be submitted online via dedicated template available on the Application Process’s webpage, by 31 March 2021 at the very latest, in English or French.

Le prix international UNESCO-Russie Mendeleïev pour les sciences fondamentales vise à promouvoir et à honorer l’excellence dans les sciences fondamentales, définies comme comprenant les disciplines de la chimie, de la physique, des mathématiques et de la biologie, fondement sur lequel la connaissance scientifique peut être propagée et qui sont fondamentales pour l’avancement de l’innovation et du développement durable.
L’UNESCO invite les gouvernements des États membres, en consultation avec leur commission nationale, ou par des organisations non gouvernementales entretenant un partenariat officiel avec l’UNESCO et actives dans les domaines visés par le prix, par les chaires UNESCO, les centres de catégorie 2, les unions scientifiques internationales et les universités à proposer des candidats individuels pour l’édition 2021 du Prix international UNESCO-Russie Mendeleïev en sciences fondamentales.
Décerné chaque année à deux lauréats, ce prix a pour but de récompenser des personnes pour leurs réalisations majeures en termes de développement, de diffusion et de coopération internationale dans le domaine des sciences fondamentales, qui ont eu un impact transformationnel significatif à l’échelle régionale ou mondiale. Chacun des deux lauréats individuels recevra une récompense financière de 250 000 USD, ainsi qu’une médaille d’or et un diplôme.
Nul ne peut présenter sa propre candidature.
