JNWES History

INWES Japan was established in 2002, and it is a unique voluntary organization that specializes in international networking activities. It was composed of 3 women’s science and engineering professional associations. They are JWEF (Japan Women Engineers Forum), JSPEW (The Japan Society of Professional Engineers of Women), and SJWS (The Society of Japanese Women Scientists).  In 2015, INWES Japan changed its name to JNWES and became a non-profit organization to be more socially trusted and sustainable.

Mission: Realization of a better society through science and technology
Vision: Proactive activities and contributions of women in science and technology fields
Core Values: Building an international network and fostering female scientists and engineers
Goals: Achievement of diversity in the scientific and engineering community

JNWES Members

JNWES are composed of four organizations. The total member is about 620.
Four organizations are as follows:

  • JWEF (Japan Women Engineers Forum)
  • JSPEW (The Japan Society of Professional Engineers of Women)
  • SJWS (The Society of Japanese Women Scientists)
  • Team GIMAJO(the Hitachi Technical Engineers Association activity group, ENCHANT: women Engineers for Non-profit Charity of Hitachi Across Nations).

JNWES Activities

JNWES promotes domestic and international exchange and collaboration among female engineers and scientists. In addition, we support career development for young women engineers and scientists. We also encourage female junior and senior high school students to have many options and choose a career in science and technology.

Main activities during 2023-2024

  • July 2023: participated in APNN (Mongolia)
  • August 2023&2024: At a summer school for junior and senior high school girl students (support for continuing to science-related subjects), JNWES held a poster exhibition, etc.
  • Sep 2023: participated in ICWES19 (New Zealand)
  • May and July 2024: Gave lectures at science course selection programs for female junior and senior high school students in Kanagawa Prefecture.
  • August and October 2024: Gave lectures at Kanda Jogakuen Girls’ High School to help students know science and engineering fields and consider their future careers.
  • October 2024: participated and made presentations in INWES-APNN(Hanoi, Vietnam)

Each of four organizations holds at least one lecture per year on science and technology to raise awareness of the current situation of women in science.
